The White team defeated the Red team 3-2, during the annual Carolina Hurricanes Caniac Carnival on Sunday.  Sergey Tolchinsky scored on a penalty shot to give his team the win.

The more experienced of the two squads performed very well as the red team’s line of Derek Ryan, Brock McGinn, and Phil Di Giuseppe had several good moments.  Di Giuseppe was one of those who played a physical game.

After Steven Lorentz gave the White squad a 1-0 lead on a tipped shot in front of the net, McGinn tied the game on a nifty backhander that got past goalie Alex Nedeljkovic.  Just a bit later, Di Giuseppe buried a penalty shot to give the Reds a 2-1 lead.

Andrew Poturalski then tied it up with a slick move to the front of the net. It seemed like the contest might end up tied until Tolchinski scored the game-winner and he made the penalty shot look easy.  That is certainly a skill the big club could use in those shootout scenarios during the regular season.

The Russian sniper made some other skilled moves throughout the scrimmage and at one time early in the contest faked out two defenders as he dangled his way to an open shot.

The game-winning penalty shot was awarded after Brendan Woods knocked Tyler Ganly into the boards awkwardly with a tough hit.  Ganly had to be helped from the game and was seen afterward with his shoulder wrapped up in ice.  Woods is another player who had been physical throughout.

Nedeljkovic made a couple of quick flashy saves with his glove hand to preserve the victory at the end.

Next up will be a couple of preseason games in Washington and Tampa Bay.

Coach Smith’s thoughts are next.

  1. sounds like Tolchinsky has a game similar to Skinner’s insofar as creating his own shot. maybe don’t put them on a line together, aye?
