Brody Sutter led the game off with a goal late in the first. Lucas Wallmark then made it 2-0 in the second period and then Jeff Skinner scored the eventual game-winning goal later in the second.
Elias Lindholm led the team with six shots on goal. Skinner was next with five.
The Canes outshot the Bolts 38-28 for the game and also had 18 blocked shots.
Next up will be the first home preseason appearance for Carolina as they play the Lightning at the PNC on Friday night.
