The Carolina Hurricanes made two moves on Sunday which improved their depth.

First up, they signed free agent defenseman Jakub Nakladal to a one year, $600,000 contract which in essence is a one-way deal.  Nakladal could still be assigned to Charlotte but he will be getting NHL pay if he does get re-assigned.

The blueliner most recently played for the Czech team in the World Cup and played in the Calgary Flames organization last season.

The 28-year-old has played in the KHL for several years and played in Finland for one.

Next, they claimed Martin Frk off the waiver wire from the Detroit Red Wings. The 23-year-old forward scored 27 goals last year in Grand Rapids.  Over three years, he scored 36 goals and 32 assists in his AHL career.  He was Detroit’s second round pick in 2012.

The Canes will need to keep him on their NHL roster or risk losing him on the waivers if they try to re-assign him to Charlotte.

  1. Frk sounds promising – but I really hope he doesnt bump PDG out of the lineup. We can’t really send him down or we will lose him to waivers. Twitter was saying that there were 2 other teams that put in a claim for him. We now have a logjam in our bottom 9. I have no idea where he is going to fit in. Its going to be interesting to say the least.

  2. Also for what it’s worth all the analytics crowd LOVE the nakladal signing say it turns a good young defense into a great young defense
