The Hurricanes had another busy day today and ended up fitting their roster to within the required 23 player limit.
First off, they claimed defenseman Klas Dahlbeck off of waivers. The 25-year-old skated in 71 games last season for the Coyotes and while he’s not necessarily a high level offensive threat, he does make an interesting possibility for expansion draft fodder this coming summer, if nothing else.
At 6’3 and 200 plus pounds, the left-handed shot had two goals and six assists while averaging over 15 minutes a game last season, although that does make him more offensively potent than a couple of Carolina forwards were from last year.
Later in the day, the club made the necessary adjustments to trim the roster to 23 players.
They placed Ryan Murphy on the IR, designated Sergey Tolchinsky, Tyler Ganly, and Andrew Miller as injured “non-roster” players, and noted that newly signed defenseman Jakub Nakladal was a “non-roster” player. Nakladal is reportedly sorting out visa issues at the moment and has yet to travel to Raleigh.
Warren Foegele was reassigned to Kingston of the OHL. It was reported that Ron Francis said the forward could have made the Checkers roster, but playing top six minutes in the juniors was better for him than playing bottom six in the AHL.
Lukas Wallmark, Trevor Carrick and Hayden Fleury were reassigned to Charlotte.
For now, the roster and lines are as follows:
Di Giuseppe – Frk
Cam Ward, Eddie Lack
In the media scrum today, Bill Peters mentioned that Martin Frk was not going to have anything handed to him, he would have to earn his playing time like everyone else. It should be interesting to see how things work out there.
Stalberg missed practice Today. Peters said he took some personal time and had a minor lower body concern. It should not keep him out of the opener.
